I enjoy taking photographs, but I feel that calling myself a photographer,
amateur or otherwise, would be a stretch. In fact I still have four year
old undeveloped rolls of film lying about the house.
I have taken all of the photographs shown, except where noted.
Family
This is the engagement photo that Stacy and I sent with our wedding
announcements. The photo was taken in early February 1993 by Tom
Hindley. The background is the mill wheel at the Colvin Run mill,
a historic mill in Fairfax County, Virginia.
17 September 1994. This picture was taken on the day of the blessing of our
daughter Lauren. The people in the photograph are Stacy's parents, Steve
and Onalee Wood, myself, Lauren, my wife Stacy, and my parents, Aartje and
Robert Smith.
September 1994. This is my mother and my daughter taking a nap. Lauren was
about a month old at the time.
Civil War
I am interested in the history of the US Civil War, and living in Virginia
provides me with opportunities to visit many of the sites involved in that
war.
Antietam
Antietam Creek, which gently flows through the quiet countryside near
Sharpsburg, Maryland, was the site of one of the most ferocious and
bloody battles of the war.
Antietam Creek.
Burnsides' Bridge. The sycamore tree seen in the top left corner of
the picture was a young tree at the time of the battle.
Burnsides' Bridge, as seen from the location of the Confederate artillery
emplacement.
This is another view of Burnsides' bridge. The creek was shallow enough to be
forded next to the point from which this photo was taken, yet no such effort
was made. All attention was focused on claiming and crossing the bridge,
Thomas Jefferson
I am a great admirer of Thomas Jefferson. I particularly enjoy visiting
Monticello, his beloved home near Charlottesville, Virginia.
In this photograph you can see one of the guest quarters near the left
side of the picture.
Idaho
I grew up in southern Idaho. I dearly love Idaho, and it will always remain
my home.
Alturas Lake is a mountain lake in the Sawtooth Mountains of central Idaho.
I spent a lot of time here as I grew up, and it is probably my favorite
place in the entire world.
As you can see, the water in Alturas Lake is very clear. It is also
quite cold.
I was involved in scouting throughout my youth. The council in which
I lived had a camp near Cape Horn, Idaho, called Camp Bradley. It was also
called the Cape Horn Scout Reservation. I spent a great deal of time
at Camp Bradley, both as a participant at the camp and also one year
as camp staff.
Religion
I am an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
commonly known as the Mormons.
Temples
Temple worship is an important part of life in the LDS church, and the church
has temples throughout the world.
