Terra-cotta facade of the Natural History Museum (879x489)
Architect Alfred Waterhouse covered his palatial design in decorative patterns of terra-cotta. The Natural History Museum opened in 1881 after nine years of construction. This picture shows only half of the freshly cleaned 675-foot facade on Cromwell Road.
