| You may be interested to know what some of the members
of the 2001 tours had to say about their trips. Here are unedited versions
of what a few drinks will cause people to put into print:
1. Dear Mister Dique, Your special touches touched us all, creating
an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Thank you for your irreverence, which
made the past relevant and the present full of delicious humor. Before,
we worried that tours would be bad for us. Now we worry that no tour will
ever be as good. We will spread the word that you show good Turkey, you
bet! With much affection,
2. Dick, With much appreciation for the extraordinary adventure in Turkey.
I feel especially privileged to have been exposed to your knowledge, insight,
and spirit throughout this trip. My best wishes to you in continuing these
wonderful tours.
3. Dear Dick, What a wonderful trip it was for us! You are truly a "kanka,"
which is Turkish for "fellow traveler." Your knowledge, strangely uncanny
organizational abilities, and ineluctable impish personality made the last
three weeks a true Turkish fantasy for us. We wish you nothing but success
in the future and sincerely hope you will continue to stay in touch with
us.
4. Dick, Thanks so much for sharing your "Adventures of Minnesota Caldwell
in the Temple of Dionysos." Here's our poem by that name:
We enjoyed all those stoas (Texan for shops)
5. Dear "Dique," This tour certainly has been "unique," both in terms of what we've learned and experienced in Greece and Turkey, and the special attributes of you, our tour leader. We learned to tolerate your abuse while benefiting from your extraordinary knowledge about ancient and modern cultures. Believe it or not, we will miss you our final day here in Turkey; we've actually grown accustomed to you! Both of us will recommend your tours to our friends and make every effort to let others know about them. Thanks so much for everything, Jane Pade (Long Beach) and Paula Topley (Templeton CA) 6. Dick, Thank you for helping us conquer Istanbul and Turkey's important
historical sites. We are grateful that you kept your word, as this was
not the usual sort of tour, which we have always avoided. Your capacity
to tap a seemingly unlimited store of knowledge engrossed and informed.
We learned and laughed a lot. Thanks so much.
7. Dick, With great appreciation for making the heights (Delfi and Termessos) thrilling and challenging and the rest of the expedition so enjoyable. From the first sight of the Parthenon at the end of Odos Mouson to the Blue Mosque, this has been a most memorable trip. I don't think that we could have seen more of Greece and Turkey better than we have done over the past four weeks. Your knowledge, expertise, patience, and humor have helped keep us all sane and congenial. To use a little of that other ancient language: Maximas gratias tibi agimus. Don and Marguerite Connor (New York City) 8. Dear Dick, We are very grateful for your efforts large and small
to ensure that we and our fellow-travellers had such a memorable tour through
Greece and Turkey. You delivered far more than the brochure promised. Travelling
with you in this part of the world is an easy-going, first-class post-doctoral
seminar on antiquity, and a fun-filled look at the varied folkways of contemporary
Greece and Turkey as well. The travel was simply outstanding. Best of luck
as you continue your enthralling travel through Greece, Turkey, and Egypt.
We know that all your clients will benefit as much as we have. Cheers!
