Easside Percussion
Using traditional, world, and found percussion instruments with lo-tech electronics and electric collectibles, EasSide Percussion creates music that can range from a calming sea of ambient sound to an exhilarating massive drumbeat, leaving their audiences immersed in a sphere of sound which touches a most primal and intelligent part of the listener.
The diverse experience of its members contributes strongly to the overall creativity of the group. Their enormous recording and performance experience in jazz, rock, world, new and experimental music gives them an edge in creating music that is both current and relevant. They continue to search for and create new music, in order to keep that edge, always expanding upon their repertoire and knowledge.
Its members have worked and recorded extensively with John Cage, John Zorn, Philip Glass, Marc Ribot, God Is My Co-Pilot, Zeena Parkins, and Anthony Coleman to name a few (see individual bios and discographies). The Village Voice called them "virtuosos, playing rhythms off one another with split second coordination."
In what they condidered a dream come true ESP recently spent two weeks in a studio in upstate New York, the room filled with their collection of found, traditonal and electric collectibles, recording their first CD for the Avant label. What they came up with went beyond the sounds and music that they had been experimenting with up to that point. It was a surprising and exciting musical development for them. The CD Easside Percussion, Avant 073 was released in February 1998.
