Transferring your Web site from your Personal Computer to the WebCom server

Transferring your files to your WebCom account can be accomplished several ways, depending upon your environment and the web authoring tools you might have used to design your site.

Using Web Authoring Tools

Some web authoring tools, such as Netscape Navigator Gold and Microsoft FrontPage, have built-in mechanisms for uploading your files. WebCom provides detailed help on how to use these tools in conjunction with WebCom:

Transferring individual Web site files

To transfer your pre-designed Web pages to your WebCom account you will want to use FTP, a simple method for moving files between computers on the Internet. If you have never used FTP before, WebCom provides detailed instructions for using FTP. Once your web pages have been transferred to the www directory of your account, along with any included binary files (pictures, sounds, etc.), they will be immediately available on the Web.

The www directory

The www directory under your home directory is where the WebCom Web Server looks for files. For instance, accesses to "http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/filename.html" or "http://www.your_domain.com/filename.html" will access filename.html in this directory. Any files you wish to make available through the Web should be placed under the www directory.

If you create another directory in your home directory (where you wind up when you log in), and place files in it, people will not be able to access them through the Web. All directories intended to store files for distribution through the Web should be placed under the www directory and its subdirectories. Renaming, deleting, or moving the www directory will also prevent any Web access to your files.
