FrontPage: Publishing your Internet Web to your Local Computer

This page is a part of our FrontPage documentation, which contains instructions for opening a FrontPage web that is on-line, and publishing it to your local computer. This is most commonly done when for whatever reason (accidental deletion, computer crash, etc.) your local copy of your web no longer exists, and you want to copy the live version of your web from WebCom's system to your local computer. The following instructions come directly from our experts in Technical Support.

Before you start the task of transferring your web files from WebCom back down to your computer. You will need to know the name of the local Web (usually the computer name). One way to find this out is to attempt to open a FrontPage web. FrontPage 98 will open up a box listing some webs, and the webs that have (local) after the name of Web are local webs. If you highlight one of these webs, you should be able to see the name of your computer underneath the white box. For example, if the name of your computer is 'mycomp', the location under the white box would read

http://mycomp

Please write down this name, "mycomp", as you will need it later.

If you want the pages/images/etc from one of your domain names back to your computer, you will next need to connect directly to the WebCom server with FrontPage.

Thus, you would want to first open up FrontPage. From there select the option for opening a FrontPage web. Then click on the 'more webs' button. In the box that comes up type www.yourdomain.com name in all lower case. For example, you could type:

www.bunnysbeachballs.com

And then select the 'list webs' button. You should then be able to select the <Root web>. You should then be prompted for your WebCom userid and password.

Now you have the Web open directly from the WebCom server. Thus you should be able to use the publish feature to 'publish' the web to your own computer. Select the Publish FrontPage Web from the file pull down menu. Then push the 'More Webs' button. Clear out everything in the box that comes up, and then type the name of your computer, in my example that was 'mycomp'. If you already have a web on your computer, you may to want to create a different web by publishing to mycomp/newweb, for example.

And that's it, you should then have a copy of your FrontPage web from WebCom published down to your computer.
