[This is a copy of the new user's letter, automatically sent to you when your account is activated.] Dear WebCom User, Your new WebCom account is ready! o Your WWW address: http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/ o If you requested a domain name, then registration of your domain name is in progress. Domain name registrations normally take 1-3 days. You will be notified via email when your domain name registration is complete. At that time, your home page will also be accessible as http://www.your-domain.com/ (and your ftp address will be ftp.your-domain.com), and you will be able to create email addresses@your-domain.com. o Your FTP address is: ftp.webcom.com/~webcom (your directory is $rel_home_dir) (ftp://ftp.webcom.com/~webcom/pubX/userid/) o Any email sent to userid@webcom.com will be forwarded to you at [your email address]. o Your main gateway for managing your account via your Web browser may be found at http://webcom.com/~webcom/login How Your Account Is Set Up You can check on the status of your domain name application through our online domain name services menu at http://webcom.com/~webcom/services/dns/ For more information on WebCom's domain name service, please see http://webcom.com/~webcom/help/dns/ Your WebCom home directory is also your FTP directory, and contains your "www" sub-directory as well. The www directory is where you want to put files to be available on the Web. Files in this directory are available to Web browsers despite any FTP permissions you may have set on them. For more info on permissions please see http://webcom.com/~webcom/help/ftp/permissions.html The "logs" directory under your home directory is where a file name "log", containing a record of all accesses to your site through FTP and WWW is stored. This log is updated with new accesses periodically throughout the day. The URL http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid will look in your www directory for a file named "home.html". The URL http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/subdir/file.html would look for the file "file.html" in the subdirectory called "subdir" in your www directory, etc. The "home.html" file under your "www" directory is a temporary file placed in your account so that people browsing WebCom do not get "dead" links. Replace it with your own page when you are ready, making sure the replacement is named "home.html". You can do this quickly and easily with our Instant Site service, accessible from the Customer Online Services menu after you log into your account. A daily Site Activity Report will be emailed to you as well as written to a file named "report" in your "logs" directory. To alter the default settings for this report, a form interface is available at the following URL: http://webcom.com/~webcom/services/report. Extensive help for HTML authoring can be found at WebCom's Guide to Publishing on the Web at http://webcom.com/~webcom/html/, and help regarding services specific to WebCom can be found at Help for WebCom Customers at http://webcom.com/~webcom/help/. If you are going to be using Microsoft FrontPage to publish your site, see http://webcom.com/~webcom/help/frontpage/ The Customer Online Services menu, available upon logging into your account, is where you can find detailed information concerning your bill, current charges, and make changes to your Account Information, such as billing method, contact information, and forwarding email addresses.
