This page describes how to use the Move Domain Name from Another Provider to WebCom service option. To access this or any other domain name service, log in to your account by clicking on "Control Panel" at the left of this page, and then select Domain Name Services from the main menu.

For more information about domain names at WebCom, please see our Domain Name Services documentation.

Description

This Domain Name Service is a form that you can use to initiate the move of a InterNIC domain name to WebCom. This form works exclusively with the InterNIC. For information about registering non-InterNIC domain names, please see Non-InterNIC domain names.

Moving Your Domain

To use this option, fill out the form with the proper information for the domain name you would like to move. To view the Information that the InterNIC currently has for any given domain, you can use the Check InterNIC Information/Availability of a Domain Name form. It will show you the information that the InterNIC has on record for a given domain name. When you have completed the move and clicked on the submit button, your request to move the domain is emailed to the InterNIC, and virtual hosting is activated for your domain. These events are shown as an AR (application received) and an UM (update mailed) in the Overview of your Domain Names.

If your move lists an organization name that differs from what the InterNIC has on record for that domain, the InterNIC will not process the update. If you list a organization that is different in any way (including spaces, abbreviation, and capitalization), the InterNIC will consider it not only a change of providers, but a transfer of the ownership of the domain. The InterNIC responds to these requests by sending you a 500 line message detailing the proceedure for transferring the domain between organizations. If you are not attempting to transfer a domain between organizations, make sure that you use the organization name that the InterNIC has on file for that domain. You can find out what information the InterNIC has for a domain by using the Check InterNIC Information/Availability of a Domain Name form.

The InterNIC normally acknowledges receiving the request withing 24 hours. This event is shown as a UA (update acknowledged) in the Overview of your Domain Names, and means the the InterNIC is processing the request. If you View the Status of your Domain Name, you will see the NIC-handle (tracking number) that the InterNIC has assigned to this move. This number is used to reference your application in the unlikely event that you need to contact the InterNIC about your request.

At this point, the InterNIC sends out a "Notify" message to the Administrative and Technical Contacts for the domain, asking them to acknowledge the update. Unless the InterNIC receives an affirmative reply from either one of the contacts listed, the InterNIC will not move the domain. You can find out who the contacts are for the domain are using the Check InterNIC Information/Availability of a Domain Name form. If you are not one of the contacts, you will have to make sure that the contacts know that they should approve the move. If neither contact can approve the move, or the "Notify" does not arrive, you will need to contact the InterNIC directly (703)742-4777 to arrange an alternate way of approving the move. (When contacting the InterNIC, you will need to have the NIC-handle for the request -- See above.)

Although we add your domain name to the WebCom DNS servers immediately, it normally takes up to a week for the InterNIC to process a move. When the domain is moved, the registration overview shows UC (update complete). When the InterNIC has completed the move and your ISP updates their DNS records to include the changes to domain names, it will begin to work, pointing to WebCom.

If the status of your domain shows UC but the domain does not work for you, need to contact your ISP and have them update their DNS records to include the newly created domain. Also, if your ISP was previously hosting the domain, this problem might occur if their system is still providing name service for the domain.

Domain Name Parking

By default, when you register a domain name, it becomes active in your WebCom account, allowing you to create a web site and email addresses for that domain name. Alternately, you can choose to simply reserve this domain name and "park" it. If you choose this option by checking the "Park this Domain?" checkbox the domain will be registered as normal with the normal InterNIC fee, but web and email service is not activated, and WebCom does not charge any monthly fee for the hosting of the domain.

When you wish to use this domain in the future, you can easily unpark it and use it as any other domain name. For more information about Domain Name Parking (including parking and unparking domain names) please see our Domain Name Parking documentation.

Additional Notes

If your service plan is the WebCom SiteSaver plan, each additional parked domain name costs $9.95 per 24 months. If you are using a BudgetSite, BusinessSite, or WebCommerce service plan, is no additional fee for adding parked domains. For each additional active domain name under a BudgetSite, BusinessSite, or WebCommerce service plan, there is a $9.95 monthly fee.

The move domain name form is divided into 6 sections. Each section has a hotlink to a help page for that section.
