Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about WebCom Domain Name Service |
WebCom's BudgetSite, BusinessSite and WebCommerce service plans have the capability to host multiple domain names. Domains under BudgetSite, BusinessSite, and WebCommerce accounts can be configured can point to the same home page or a different home page. Domains under SiteSaver accounts will only point to the WebCom Under Construction page. For more information on registering domain names, see our instructions on how to register domain names. See also our rates for additional domain names.
Yes you can, when your account is under either our BudgetSite, BusinessSite, or WebCommerce service plans. Please see our detailed info on configuring virtual hosting for more details.
The domain name that you specified with your new account application will not be active and working immediately following the activation of your WebCom account. New domains are processed and approved by the InterNIC, an agency separate and distinct from Web Communications. When you opened your account, we forwarded your application for the domain immediately to the InterNIC.
The InterNIC may take anywhere between two hours and two days to approve your application. Once the InterNIC approves and processes your application, you'll be notified via email. After that, there is a delay of 1 to 3 days until the InterNIC actually updates the root name servers with your domain. After your WebCom account is activated, you can monitor the status of your domain name registration using our online DNS services. Until your domain name becomes active, the URL for your Web site is http://webcom.com/~webcom/youruserid. After your domain name is activated, your home page URL is simply http://www.your-domain.com/. For more information regarding domain names please see our detailed documentation on this topic.
While your domain may have been approved and activated by the InterNIC, it usually takes up to a week after activation for a new domain to "propagate" to the entire Internet. For more details on this, see our page on domain record propagation.
The total length of the two-part name may be up to 26 characters. The only characters allowed in a domain name are letters, digits and the dash (-). Domain names cannot begin or end with a dash.
Domain names are not case sensitive. If you register "webcom.com/~webcom", then "webcom.com/~webcom" will work just was well.
Domains can be moved to WebCom with SiteSaver, BudgetSite, BusinessSite and WebCommerce service plans. If you are opening a new WebCom account, then all you need to do to move the domain is specify on the account application that the domain is an existing one, and is to be moved to the new account. To expedite your request, please verify that the email account you have listed with the InterNIC is still correct, so that you will be able to receive and respond to the verification email that the InterNIC sends out before it completes a move. If you wish to move a domain to an existing WebCom account, then you will use the online move domain form.
