Virtual Hosting
Servers on the Internet normally are assigned a single domain name which is the unique address of that server on the global network. WebCom's domain name, for example, is webcom.com/~webcom. Virtual Hosting refers to the ability of a single server to host multiple unique domains. WebCom supports Virtual Hosting. This allows our customers to have a home page with an address of the simple form http://www.yourname.com/.
If you register your own domain name (custom domain names not available under the PersonalSite service plan) such as youryourname.com, then you can advertise your URL simply as http://www.youryourname.com, which is much shorter, more professional looking, and easier for people to remember. Additionally, you have the ability to create email boxes for sending and receiving email from users@youryourname.com.
If you do not register your own domain name, then your homepage is accessed at http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/.
A virtual domain will also work with references to subdirectories off of your www directory. For instance, http://www.yourname.com/products/widget.html will access a file named widget.html in the products directory off of your www directory. The reference to this file without virtual hosting would be http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/products/widget.html.
NOTE: You can register multiple domain names within a single WebCom account, and they can either all point to the default homepage (welcome.html or index.html in the www directory) for your account, or each can point to a different home page.
