A17745. CALVINO, ITALO and WAYNE THIEBAUD. Invisible Cities [Illus. and signed by
Thiebaud]. 164 pp. First published in 1972 as Le citta invisibili, the text is a tale mixing fantasy,
reality, and philosophy. It recounts a long conversation between a young Marco Polo and an aging Kublai
Khan. The text is in English, translated from the Italian, with a new introduction, by William Weaver. This
special fine press edition is illustrated with twelve drawings by Wayne Thiebaud. Printed on mouldmade
Tiziano papers, both colored and white. The drawings, printed in different colored inks on transparent mylar
sheets, each matching the color of the following sheet, are invisible until each is turned back onto the
preceding page to overlay the text in a variety of ways. A highly inventive design collaboration between
Wayne Thiebaud and Arion publisher Andrew Hoyem. Large square 4to (14 x 12 inches). Anodized
aluminum back cover, u-posts, and lid, with sliding bar closure, as issued. No. 57 of the total numbered and
signed edition of 476. San Francisco, Arion Press, 1999. Mint condition, in mint condition box. $750.00
